Networks practice
Read the network before calculating.
Network questions test whether you can interpret vertices, edges, paths and timing. The first useful move is usually to name what the diagram represents.
Language worth knowing
- A vertex is a point or node
- An edge connects two vertices
- The degree of a vertex is the number of edges meeting it
- A path follows connected edges
- A critical path controls the earliest possible completion time
Degree example
Example question
A network has edges AB, AC, AD, BC and CD. What is the degree of vertex A?
- Hint 1Count only the edges that meet vertex A.
- Hint 2The edges meeting A are AB, AC and AD.
- Hint 3Count those three edges.
Show the worked answer
Vertex A has degree 3.
Critical-path habit
For project networks, calculate the duration of complete routes from start to finish. The longest required route is critical because any delay on it delays the whole project.
